History of the Department
The Department of Structural Mechanics at Łódź University of Technology was established on June 1, 1958. Since then the Department was headed by numerous eminent professors of the Polish school of Structural Mechanics, such as: Jerzy Mossakowski, Zbigniew Kączkowski, Czesław Woźniak, Jerzy Sułocki. Among the employees of the Department one can distinguish: Włodzimierz Wesołowski, Stanisław Zieliński, Wojciech Barański, Piotr Klemm, Sylwester Konieczny, Marian Łukowiak, Marian Suchar, Krzysztof Wilmański, Kazimierz Pustelnik.
Due to several reorganisations at the Department of Civil Enginnering, in 1970 the Department of Structural Mechanics was temporarily incorporated into the Institute of Civil Enginnering. After twenty years the Department of Structural Mechanics was re-established with prof. Sylwester Konieczny as its head. Those duties were assigned to prof. Bohdan Michalak from 2004 to 2007, and since 2007 the Department is headed by prof. Jarosław Jędrysiak.
The Department of Steel Structures was initially established as the Department of Steel and Wooden Structures by PhD Eng. Jerzy Czechowicz and MSc. Eng. Janusz Medwadowski. In 1971 the Department became a part of the Institute of Civil Engineering and in 1990 was also re-established as the Department of Steel Structures. Since then, the duties of the head of the Department were assigned to prof. Jan Bródka, prof. Rafał Garncarek, prof. Sławomir Kosiński and PhD. Eng. Marcin Wieczorek. Eventually, in 2010 the Department of Steel Structures was incorporated into The Department of Structural Mechanics.
As a consequence, in 2010 the Department of Structural Mechanics consisted of two teams: Structural Mechanics, leaded by prof. Bohdan Michalak and Steel Structures, leaded by prof. Marcin Kamiński. In 2013 the team of Steel Structures was additionally reorganised into two separate teams: the team of Steel Structures with PhD. Eng. Jerzy Goczek as head and team of Structural Reliability, headed by prof. Marcin Kamiński. Meanwhile, the duties of the head of Structural Mechanics team were assigned to the Head of the Department - prof. Jarosław Jędrysiak.
In 2021 the Department of Mechanics of Materials was included into the Department of Structural Mechanics. Within this reorganisation all existing teams were merged and supervision of the entire work of the whole Department was entrusted to prof. Jarosław Jędrysiak.
